Slide 14: Measuring Adoption Success

How Do We Know If Adoption Succeeded?

ORGANIZATIONAL ADOPTION METRICS (Necessary but Insufficient):

  • ✓ Technology deployed
  • ✓ Infrastructure ready
  • ✓ Policies in place
  • ✓ Budget allocated
  • ✓ Training materials created

These tell you the organization adopted it. They don't tell you if USERS adopted it.

USER ADOPTION METRICS (The Real Test):

  • ✓ Active usage rates (not just logins - actual task completion)
  • ✓ Tasks completed with the technology vs. workarounds
  • ✓ User satisfaction scores and feedback
  • ✓ Voluntary usage beyond mandated scenarios
  • ✓ User-generated feedback and feature requests
  • ✓ Advocacy (users recommending to others)
  • ✓ Reduction in workarounds/shadow IT
  • ✓ Time-to-proficiency for new users
  • ✓ Repeat usage patterns (coming back voluntarily)

⚠️ WARNING SIGNS OF ADOPTION FAILURE:

  • ✗ High availability, low usage (shelf-ware indicator)
  • ✗ Minimal feedback/engagement from users
  • ✗ Continued use of legacy tools "unofficially"
  • ✗ Constant help desk tickets for basic tasks
  • ✗ Users finding creative workarounds
  • ✗ Declining usage over time
  • ✗ Negative sentiment in user feedback
  • ✗ Requests to "go back to the old way"

WHAT TO MEASURE WHEN:

  • Design Phase: User involvement rate, feedback quantity
  • Development Phase: User testing participation, feature prioritization alignment
  • Deployment Phase: Early adopter satisfaction, voluntary expansion requests
  • Sustainment Phase: Active usage, feature requests, advocacy rates

Speaker notes
  • "Traditional metrics focus on organizational adoption - that's not enough"
  • "You can't manage what you don't measure - and most orgs measure the wrong things"
  • "Real adoption is measured by user behavior, not deployment status"
  • "If users are finding workarounds, you have an involuntary adoption problem"
  • "The warning signs tell you early - before the project is labeled a failure"

Transition: "Let's see what adoption success looks like in practice with a real-world example."
